Garland Symphony Orchestra

The Garland Symphony Orchestra (GSO) is a locally based orchestra that has been providing the people of Garland, Texas, and the surrounding areas with top-notch musical performances for more than 50 years. The orchestra was established in 1978, and since then, it has played a significant role in shaping the cultural landscape of the area. Its goal is to use the power of music to improve the lives of those who attend its performances.

Since 2013, Robert Carter Austin has served as the orchestra’s music director. Under his direction, the orchestra has expanded in both size and reputation. Austin, a conductor and music educator who has worked with orchestras and opera companies all over the United States and Europe, is highly regarded in his field. He is dedicated to giving young musicians in the area educational opportunities as well as bringing top-notch musical performances to the city of Garland.

The Garland Symphony Orchestra’s dedication to showcasing local talent is one of its distinctive features. The orchestra frequently hosts soloists and visiting conductors from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, and it has a close relationship with the University of North Texas’s music school. Through its Young Artist Competition, which offers gifted high school students the chance to perform with the orchestra and compete for cash prizes, the orchestra also offers a platform for young musicians.

The orchestra offers a variety of community outreach programs in addition to its regular season concerts in an effort to make music accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds. These initiatives include free performances in public spaces, shows for young audiences, and partnerships with other neighborhood groups. The orchestra also places a high priority on music education and provides a range of educational opportunities for students of all ages, such as private instruction, group lessons, and summer music camps.

The orchestra’s annual holiday concert, which includes a joyful program of seasonal classics and carols, is one of the highlights of the season. This concert is always well-attended and has grown to be a cherished local tradition. The orchestra also performs a wide range of other programs throughout the year, including pops concerts, performances of classical masterpieces, and joint performances with regional choirs and other musical ensembles.

A committed group of donors and volunteers work hard to support the orchestra and ensure its success moving forward. The orchestra’s administration and fund-raising initiatives are managed by the Garland Symphony Orchestra Association, a non-profit organization. In addition, the association offers a range of volunteer opportunities for members of the neighborhood who are enthusiastic about music and want to get involved.

The Garland Symphony Orchestra has persisted in its commitment to serving the community by performing music despite the difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. A series of virtual concerts and educational programs that the orchestra launched during the pandemic were well-received by audiences and provided much-needed entertainment during a trying time. The orchestra has resumed live performances as restrictions have loosened and is looking forward to welcoming concertgoers back into the concert hall.

The Garland Symphony Orchestra is a living example of how music can unite people and improve their quality of life. It has become a cherished institution in the city of Garland and beyond because of its dedication to showcasing local talent, offering educational opportunities, and bringing music to the community. The Garland Symphony Orchestra offers something for everyone, regardless of your level of musical experience or your interest in classical music as a whole.
